Canterbury City Council
Friend or Foe?

21st February 2025
Canterbury City Council has submitted a planning application to develop the land to the north of our clubhouse that restricts the club's ability to extend its clubhouse. The development comprises of a revamped BMX track, a skate park, play zone and picnic area with a small space for overflow parking. As a club we are not against these added facilities for the community but have asked the Council to amend its plan slightly to allow a 3-metre strip between the development and our existing lease so that we have the ability to extend our clubhouse which in turn would enable us to make more use of the clubhouse during the off season, increase our membership, host more social/charity events and play indoor bowls during the winter months.  With grants and sponsorship getting harder every year this is our goal to ensure survival of a sport for the local community that can be played by anyone without discrimination of age, sex, faith or ability.

Currently the Council are not listening to reason and refusing to understand the implications of its plan on the bowls club. Planning application is now in and we await their decision.
